Why does AC refrigerant run low, and does every service need a refill?
An AC circulates refrigerant in a closed loop; it does not burn it as fuel. A refill is therefore not an automatic yearly maintenance task. If the charge is low, the cause needs investigation before refilling.

Does poor cooling prove the refrigerant is low?
No. The wrong mode, a dirty filter, restricted airflow or another fault can affect cooling. Ice alone does not diagnose low refrigerant either. The cause of the symptom needs checking first.
Is a refill enough if there is a leak?
Added refrigerant may escape again if a leak remains. Ask the technician what caused the shortage and what work is proposed. Refrigerant type and charge must follow the manufacturer’s specifications; the pressurised circuit is not a user-maintenance task.
What should you tell the technician?
Mention when the cooling changed and whether the unit has previously been refilled. Also say if it was recently moved and reinstalled. Share any earlier service record you have; there is no need to guess missing details.
