Why does your air conditioner smell bad?
AC odours may relate to dirt and moisture in the filter or indoor unit, or to sources in the room. When the smell starts and whether other symptoms occur help determine what needs checking.
Possible sources of the smell
- Filter and indoor unit: accumulated dust and moisture can contribute to odours. A musty smell alone is not a diagnosis; internal parts may need inspection.
- Sources in the room: cooking, smoking or strongly scented products can produce smells that become noticeable as air circulates. Observe whether the same smell is present with the AC off.
- Drain surroundings: sources of odour near the hose may also need assessment. Describe the situation to a technician rather than disconnecting the hose or pouring products into it.
Why does the AC smell when it first starts?
When air starts circulating, smells from the room or dust and moisture inside the unit may become noticeable. A smell at startup alone does not identify the cause. If it recurs each time, check when the filter was last cleaned and the unit serviced; report persistent odours to a technician.
How can you deal with AC odours?
First check whether the smell comes from the room or the unit. If the filter is dirty, follow the cleaning steps in the manual. If the smell persists, the indoor unit and drain line may need inspection.
- Note whether the smell occurs only at startup, continuously or in a particular mode. Also record any water leak, poor cooling or error code.
- Check when the filter was last cleaned and when professional maintenance was performed. Only access the filter as permitted by your model’s manual, after safely isolating power.
- Not every filter is washable. Follow the model manual for washing, drying or replacement; do not spray water, perfume, bleach or an arbitrary cleaner inside the unit.
If the smell persists after cleaning
Filter cleaning may not be enough if the smell comes from inaccessible internal parts. Arrange an inspection if the odour persists or soon returns. If your model has an automatic drying function, follow its manual; it does not replace professional maintenance.
